'End of Watch' Review: David Ayers best work!

📽End Of Watch📽Review📽9.2/10📽

Directed by David Ayer

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, David Harbour, Frank Grillo, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera and Natalie Martinez

Longtime LAPD partners and friends, Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala patrol one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Though they may bend the rules, their honor and dedication to the job are unquestioned. Taylor and Zavala always have each other's back.

Ayer, who has written several police procedural films prior to this, wanted End of Watch to focus more on the friendship between partners and honest police work rather than the corruption we so typically see. Gyllenhaal, Peña, and other cast members underwent an intensive training program to prepare for their roles as police officers.

In contrast to his previous works, Ayer wanted to focus on the friendship between Taylor and Zavala and "have all the cop stuff drop away and become secondary to the chemistry of these guys" And boy did it work, the chemistry throughout the entirety of the film was top-notch!

I normally hate films done in found footage style, it use to drive me insane, but, when I saw this, Wow, it really worked. Most scenes were captured by 4 cameras simultaneously: A handheld by Gyllenhaal, cameras clipped to both stars vests and dashboard footage from there car.

This film really is something and more than likely the best Ayer has ever done and he has done some great films. The performances (from everyone), chemistry, script, cinematography, tone and plot was all first-rate!! Action, comedy, and thrills, this film has it all in abundance but the best part of the film is the brotherhood between cops, the chemistry and the love, after everything they go through, it really is brilliant.
