'Atomic Blonde' Review: Theron is no wonder woman but she's still pretty awesome and bloody sexy!
🔫Atomic Blonde🔫Review🔫8.5/10🔫
Lorraine Broughton is the most elite spy in MI6. With the Berlin Wall about to fall, she travels into the heart of the city to retrieve a priceless dossier and take down a ruthless espionage ring. Once there, she teams up with an embedded station chief to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
Theron punches, kicks, stabs and shoots her way through this beautifully choreographed, narratively complex, but just a tad sluggish action movie from ome of the maker's of John Wick . Former stuntman and complete bad-ass David Leitch produced and co-directed (without credit) John Wick; given that it and Atomic Blonde are the same kind of nonstop, heart-pounding action-based stories, it's tough not to compare them. But when you do, this film comes up just a tiny bit short. While John Wick was tightly constructed, visually beautiful, and stripped down to the point of existentialism, Atomic Blonde runs about 15 mins too long, hits some slow patches, and requires a bit of work to follow.
Nevertheless, it stands head and shoulders above most shaky-cam action movies with its gorgeous fight footage. The fight scene involving a yellow garden hose choreographed to George Michaels Father Figure was nothing short of a spectacle. Another sequence, in which Lorraine must whisk away a wounded Spyglass and defend him from armed attackers, takes place in extremely long takes with combatants working from all kinds of angles, with all kinds of props, getting realistically, physically exhausted as the fight rages on in such brutal fashion. It's also heartening to see Theron taking punches, collecting bruises, and still getting back up on her feet even after being beaten to a pulp. She's no Wonder Woman, but she's still pretty awesome and still bloody sexy.
Every single cast member, supporting or leading were top notch; John Goodman, Sofiane Boutella, Eddie Marsan and Bill Skarsgard, but, my 3 favourite performances came from Theron, Toby Jones and James Mcavoy.
