'The Hateful Eight review: Quentin is undeniably a genius!
8.4/10
Quentin Tarantino' The Hateful Eight is a Western about eight strangers who seek refuge from a blizzard in a stagecoach stopover some time after theAmerican Civil War. It promises -- and delivers -- a metric ton of extremely strong violence in typical Tarantino fashion.
Tarantino's eighth movie is long, moving inevitably toward an expected, brutally violent climax -- but along the way the colorful characters and playful dialogue provide a twisted good time. The one-room pressure-cooker setting, plus the presence of Michael Madson and Tim Roth, may remind viewers a little of Reservoir Dogs, which can be both good and bad.
That film's clever, sinister structure left audiences wanting more, whereas the lengthy, bonkers The Hateful Eight gives up everything (and the kitchen sink) which I appreciate because as simple as the premise/set-up all seems, the characters' motivations are often deliberately deceptive. Long dialogue sequences exist for the sheer joy of their sound and rhythm but are also sometimes used as sleight-of-hand. Tarantino also uses music (by Ennio Morricone) and silence to brilliant effect; that, plus the infectious character performances from the ensemble cast makes this truly killer entertainment.
Every single cast member was bloody brilliant and they all left there own personal stamp on the film so I didn't think it would be fair to leave anyone out:
Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren a.k.a. "The Bounty Hunter", Kurt Russell as John Ruth a.k.a. "The Hangman", Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue a.k.a. "The Prisoner", Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix a.k.a."The Sheriff", Demián Bichir as Bob (Marco the Mexican) a.k.a. "The Mexican", Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray (English Pete Hicox) a.k.a. "The Little Man", Michael Madsen as Joe Gage (Grouch Douglass) a.k.a. "The Cow Puncher", Bruce Dern as General Sanford "Sandy" Smithers a.k.a. "The Confederate", James Parks as O.B. Jackson, Channing Tatum as Jody Domingre, Daisy's brother, Dana Gourrier as Minnie Mink, Zoë Bell as Six-Horse Judy, Lee Horsley as Ed and finally Gene Jones as Sweet Dave. All in all I love Quentin and all his work so I don't need to point out what this guy is great at because we all know. 8.4/10
