Fans of video games and movies are still waiting for a movie that does justice to video games and with a few due to be released soon maybe that could change. Starting with Tomb Raider who is building a cast and a crew that has many hopeful that it could be the film that does the job. Walton Goggins was recently revealed as the film's antagonist, but he says his character is a bit more complicated than simply being a villain.
"Is he a villain? Sure, that is an easy description. An antagonist, for sure. But [like other characters] I have been so lucky to have the opportunity to play over the course of my career, there are real reasons behind his antagonism, and it's not what you'd expect. He is very complicated, and his motivations are pure".
Walton Goggins will star opposite Alicia Vikander as the iconic Lara Croft in the planned Tomb Raider movie that will reboot the film franchise following the Angelina Jolie movies. He's very complimentary of the quality of the script when speaking to Yahoo. Much of that praise appears to be dealing specifically with the nuance of his own character. While Goggins will apparently be playing the movie's "bad guy" it seems clear that the character would not necessarily see himself in that way. Whatever his personal goals are, he feels that there is nothing wrong or selfish about them. Goggins doesn't say that the character feels that his motivations are pure, he says that they are pure.
A good script is the foundation of any good movie and Walton Goggins works with Quentin Tarantino, so he knows good scripts when he sees them. The fact that the script is apparently solid, and that the characters in it are not simply traditional heroes and villains is a good sign for fans who are hoping this could be the film that turns video games into a serious medium for adaptation. We know that the new Tomb Raider movie will be using the current video game series as inspiration, which sets up a much younger Lara getting involved in her first adventures, but it will also be telling an original story not set within the game world. In the games Lara's father is dead, but Lara's search for him will be a key part of the plot of the new film.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet is the screenwriter currently credited with the Tomb Raider script that has Walton Goggins character as a far from traditional villains. Robertson-Dworet has yet to have any movies hit the big screen, but her talent is in significant demand. Her name is also attached to a potential third Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie as well as the recently announced Gotham City Sirens.
While it's far too early to tell, we're certainly more interested in where the new Tomb Raider movie is headed than we might have previously thought. Tomb Raider is set for release on March 16, 2018.
