Marvel And Hulu's 'Runaways' Finale Review: 'Hostile' Is Exactly That And More!
π Marvel And Hulu's Runaways π Finale π Review π 8.5/10 π
Starting off right where the last episode of Runaways ended, “Hostile” sees the young group of kids facing their parents at the construction site. In their first real attempt to stop PRIDE.
Jonah obviously intervenes and suddenly he starts to glow like Karolina, but white instead of multicolored. He quickly bests the team, but Karolina unleashes her powers and fights back. In the midst of a Dragon Ball Z standoff she tells the young gang to flee while she takes care of Jonah, who looks like he is out to kill her.
We then cut to the next day. Karolina has been captured by Jonah and the Church of Gibborim. In a big reveal, Jonah tells Karolina that he is her real father. While this is going on, PRIDE decide to betray Jonah and look for their kids. They also plan to once and for all kill Jonah! But this comes after Leslie finally confesses to Tina and Robert Minoru that she and Jonah were the ones that killed Amy.
Concurrently, Alex and the rest of the young gang are hiding in LA's woods. They soon concoct a plan to break Karolina out of the Church. Their plan succeeds, but we soon find out that Jonah had planned for her escape! With no home to go back to, Alex decides to make a deal with the enemy of his enemy (Darius Davis), the gangster whom Alex’s dad was friends with. Darius gave Alex money and a gun, but I'm not sure what Alex told Darius. Though, presumably, it’s PRIDE secrets.
After the team get new outfits, they go to a bus station to buy tickets to a faraway city. That’s when all of a sudden their pictures appear on a nearby television. A news anchor says that they are the ones responsible for Destiny Gonzalez’s death and have kidnapped Molly, which of course, isn’t true. With the police after them, the young gang formally become the Runaways as they run away to a destination unknown.
To say that this season finale was great is an understatement. Indeed, it was spectacular. Though I did have to watch it twice to fully appreciate it and it did leave us with more questions than answers, “Hostile” was an episode to remember. The young cast demonstrated why they were born for their roles and the clear standout was Gert (Ariela Barer). Her relationship with her pet dinosaur, whom she finally named Old Lace, was beautiful and heartbreaking. The Runaways wouldn’t be the Runaways without Old Lace.
PRIDE also disbanded, making the parents the good guys once and for all. The Runaways don’t see it that way, though. PRIDE will be looking for them, for sure. But now it's not for malevolent intentions. After Tina and Robert found out that Jonah killed Amy, there’s no question they’ll use all the resources at their disposal to bring Jonah down and possibly even Leslie to. The same goes for the Wilders, who have plans of their own to find Alex. The most shocking twist, though, was Frank’s unequivocal loyalty to Jonah, almost as if Jonah has had him under some kind of trance all this time, that's still a big question for me? Jonah once again is suffering from that horrible skin condition he had back in earlier episodes. Presumably, he is on the brink of death, but Frank has offered to sacrifice himself, believing Jonah can protect Karolina. Of course, we all know that Jonah is only out for himself, but does Frank.
This was definitely a fantastic way to end a fantastic first season. And, unsurprisingly, Runaways has already been renewed for a second season. Marvel and Hulu have definitely created one of the best Marvel TV shows in a long time!!
