ITS GOT TO MAKE YOU LAUGH! DC AND WARNER BROS. HAVE JUST MADE THERE LIVES EVEN HARDER WITH A NIGHTWING MOVIE!
If you thought you had a handle on the DC superhero movies, Warner Bros. is about to mess everything up once again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay is currently in talks to direct a movie about Nightwing—a.k.a. Dick Grayson, the original Robin and Batman’s first sidekick—with The Accountant‘s Bill Dubuque writing the script.
This is where it gets confusing: Though McKay directed The Lego Batman Movie and that did include a goofy take on Dick Grayson (voiced by Michael Cera), this project will be part of the live-action Justice League-based universe and not the animated Lego universe. Also, while none of the traditional Robin characters have physically appeared in the live-action movie universe, an old Robin suit with a taunting message from the Joker painted on it did appear in Batman V Superman.
That seemed like a very overt nod to Jason Todd, the second Robin, who was famously beaten to death by the Joker in the comics, which means this Nightwing movie is probably not about the guy who used to own that suit. So, unless new director Matt Reeves’ sThe Batman is going to dig into some of this backstory or introduce the Dick Grayson character in his movie, the Nightwing movie is going to have a lot of work to do explaining where it fits into the timeline of this universe. In other words, throw out your chart explaining how the DC movies and their many characters fit together, because you’re going to need a new one.
