'The Cloverfield Paradox' Review: Whatever They Were Going For, It Didn't Work!

⭐ The Cloverfield Paradox ⭐ Review ⭐ 4/10 ⭐

What a way to let down a half decent franchise. First of all, who realeases there first trailer for a film the day it comes out -- what kind of marketing technique is that. Second of all, what a waste of a brilliant cast and third of all, what a mess.

Who goes into making a film thinking right, we have Alien, Prometheus and Life, what one should we borrow from, and then choose Life, I mean WTF guys, you chose the most unsuccessful of them all and couldn't even replicate that. Worms instead of the copious amounts of other creatures/aliens, another great choice, being different an all.

Now let's delve into this shambolic movie. The core problem for me was the fact that they couldn't get the balance right at all, going for a sci-fi/horror/thriller and then trying to make it funny, It just didn't work, it was so off. And this is where my second core problem comes in, Enter Chris O Dowd, what a terrible casting choice for this film, every single scene he stood out like a sore thumb, if the bad jokes weren't enough, he only makes the film feel more off due to the fact he never looks phased, not one bit, not even when he loses his arm. Everytime he made a joke, the timing was off or the mood wasn't right. Poor guy.

Despite looking like a big-budget movie It definetly lacked in the special effects department on several occasions -- one prime example is when Chris O Dowd gets his arm stuck in the ship. The hole cast felt underutilized and uncomfortable and the idea which was the best part about the film (alternate realities, different dimensions, paradoxes and all that jazz) was wasted as they failed to capitalise on it.

The only positive was some of the scenes outside the spacecraft were actually quite magnificent. All in all I'm extremely disapointed and despite it being a multi-genre film, I don't think it would appeal to any of the genre fans.
