GUESS WHAT BIG HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER IS GOING TO MISS OUT ON OVER £80000000?!
It all started to go wrong when Alec Baldwin’s The Boss Baby beat Ghost in the Shell to box office number 1.
As it stands, Ghost in the Shell has an embarrassing worldwide gross of just $73.6 million (£59 million), according to Box Office Mojo.
Now film finance sources have revealed to Deadline that the Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi anime adaptation will lose at least $60 million (£48 million).
However others project that the loss will be over $100 million (£80 million) due to estimations that the film’s budget was in the range of $180 million (£144 million).
So what went wrong? There are always numerous factors, however the one that stands out is the whitewashing controversy – something that may have been the reason for the failure of Matt Damon’s The Great Wall.
Even Paramount admits this will have affected the film’s box office, according to the studio’s domestic distribution chief, Kyle Davis.
Speaking with CBC he said: “We had hopes for better results domestically. I think the conversation regarding casting impacted the reviews.
“You've got a movie that is very important to the fanboys since it's based on a Japanese anime movie.”
He added: “So you're always trying to thread that needle between honouring the source material and make a movie for a mass audience.
“That's challenging, but clearly, the reviews didn't help.”
